There’s speculation that David Harbour wants to get behind the wheel. Neill Blomkamp, director of District 9, is attached to produce and appear in the cinematic adaptation of the popular Gran Turismo video game franchise, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Gran Turismo series of racing video games are known for their realistic depictions of vehicles and environments. With players behind the wheels of authentic vehicles, each one reacting and feeling much like the real thing. With no overall narrative, many players are left wondering what the film will be about. Well, it seems like they’re taking it in a meta route.
The next Gran Turismo film will be inspired by the real-life story of a young man who played the game series and became so good at it that he was offered a chance to become a professional racing car driver. It has been reported that Harbour would portray a retired motorist who helps the teenager get their driver’s licence. In 2016, when Stranger Things became a success all over the world, Harbour’s name suddenly appeared on everyone’s lips. Before then, he was in several successful shows and films, including The Newsroom, Manhattan, Revolutionary Road, and Quantum of Solace. Harbour has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Black Widow, revived Hellboy, and provided his voice for Star Wars: Visions after his breakout role in Stranger Things.
His upcoming appearances include the action comedy Violent Night and the Netflix original heist comedy We Have A Ghost. In addition, it was just confirmed that he will be making a comeback to the MCU in Thunderbolts. Blomkamp has been absent from the director’s chair since Chappie in 2015. The other is a low-budget horror film called Demonic, which he shot undercover during the epidemic. Since Chappie, though, he has produced a slew of short films in styles as varied as action, science fiction, and humour. Blomkamp will take the helm, with a screenplay by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin.
Written by Hall, American Sniper earned him an Oscar nomination. As a writer, Baylin has been nominated for an Oscar for his work on King Richard, and he has another Oscar-worthy script in the works with Creed III. PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, alongside Doug Belgrad and Dana Brunetti, will be responsible for overseeing the development of Gran Turismo. Not only that, but Hall will be working with the game’s developer, Kazunori Yamauchi, as an executive producer. Qizilbash made the following comment on the forthcoming adaptation: We’re thrilled to be working with Columbia Pictures once again to bring Gran Turismo to life on the big screen since it’s one of PlayStation’s longest-running and most adored titles.
We are excited for people to witness Neill’s take on this motivational real tale of a gamer who went on to become a professional racing car driver. On August 11, 2023, the movie Gran Turismo is set to debut in theatres.
