May December will feature Charles Melton in one of his future roles. Deadline reports that Melton has been chosen to play the lead role in the next picture by filmmaker Todd Hayne. The 36-year-old husband of Gracie (Melton) and father of two children are Joe (Melton) (Julianne Moore). Joe and Gracie had an infamous affair at the time that he was her student. They are the proud parents of twin high school grads. Melton is widely recognised for his role as Reggie Mantle in Riverdale, airing on The CW. His other credits include Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman’s Secret Headquarters and Michael Mailer’s Heart of Champions.
May December’s narrative is, in a meta move, based on the events leading up to the production of a film about Joe and Gracie’s life.
Actress Elizabeth (Natalie Portman), who will portray Gracie in a film adaptation of their story, visits the family to better understand her role. Joe, however, is forced to face his past and present after hearing another’s the account of the same events. Director Todd Haynes, whose resume includes The Velvet Underground, Dark Waters, and Wonderstruck, is at the helm. The screenplay was penned by Samy Burch. Alex Mechanik and Burch collaborated on the story. Haynes has noted that what drew him to the picture was Samy Burch’s great writing because of the way it handled potentially violent subject matter with observant care, allowing the story’s characters to be developed with rare nuance.
The film will be produced by Jessica Elbaum of Gloria Sanchez Productions, Will Ferrell of Ferrell & Ferrell Productions, Christine Vachon of Killer Films, and Pam Koffler of Koffler & Vachon Productions. Grant S. Johnson and Tyler W. Konney, through their respective organisations Project Infinity and Taylor and Dodge, will also serve as producers on the film. MountainA also welcomes Portman and Sophia Mas as producers. May December does not yet have a set release date. Melton now appears in Riverdale, which is streaming on Netflix and will air on The CW for its last season in 2023.
