Triple threat nominated for an Emmy (plus some) In preparation for its July launch, the set of Issa Rae’s upcoming HBO Max original series Rap Sh!t has moved to the Golden State. Rap Sh!t, which premiered less than two months ago on streaming service, has been officially renewed for a second season. The first season of the eight-episode comedy follows Shawna (Aida Osman) and her former best friend and fellow aspiring rapper/songwriter Mia (real-life rapper/songwriter KaMillion).
When the two of them get back together, they decide to start a rap group. As Shawna and Mia’s bumpy profession takes off, tensions between them and the drama surrounding their new lives escalate, building to a season finale showdown. Since its summer premiere, Rap Sh!t has been hailed as “a humorous and inventive comedy.” Famous HBO creator Rae was motivated to create this series after reading a music producer’s unwarranted criticism of female rappers. After a successful first season, production on the programme has been formally renewed for a second season and will relocate to California.
Rae attributed the first season’s success to their “very gifted crew,” while showrunner Syreeta Singleton promised a “larger and tougher” second season. Sarah Aubrey, the head of original content at HBO Max, recently discussed the future of Mia and Shawna, citing their internet sensation: “We can’t wait to keep exploring the fantastically entertaining world of RAP SH!T with Shawna and Mia. The second season will undoubtedly have more wooing and plotting thanks to the brilliantly funny and distinct viewpoints of Aida Osman, KaMillion, Issa Rae, Syreeta Singleton, and the crew at HOORAE.”
Rap Sh!t also stars Osman and KaMillion, as well as a host of other well-known actors and actresses, including Jonica Booth, Daniel Augustin, R.J. Cyler, Nijah Brenea, Pretty Vee, Victoria Richards, and a number of others. Singleton serves as the show’s executive producer, while Rae contributes to both the writing and production of Rap Sh!t. Co-executive producers include Montreal McKay of HOORAE, Jonathan Berry of 3 Arts Entertainment, and Dave Becky of HOORAE. Kevin “Coach K” Lee, Pierre “P” Thomas, Sara Rastogi of HOORAE, and the hip-hop combo Yung Miami and JT of City Girls are all co-executive producers on the film. It’s possible to watch the first season of Rap Sh!t on HBO Max right now.
