The second day of D23 is already underway, and Disney fans are having a blast. Today was a big day for Marvel Studios, and although some things went as planned, there were also a few pleasant surprises. The addition of Ke Huy Quan to the cast of Loki for the upcoming second season on Disney+ is a perfect example. In addition to his role as Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Quan is most known for his role in Richard Donner’s cult masterpiece The Goonies. Even more amusing was Quan’s “I’m extremely perplexed” quip during the showcase. Doesn’t look like the Indiana Jones jury, does it? At the ceremony, they also released the teaser for Indiana Jones 5, and it was a touching reunion between the actor and his co-star from Temple of Doom, Harrison Ford. This is especially thrilling because Quan just made his Hollywood comeback in the A24 multiverse thriller Everything Everywhere All at Once, in which he featured opposite Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis.
In the coming months, the actor will undoubtedly receive Oscar buzz for his nuanced, moving portrayal. In addition, Quan is now ready for Loki’s temporal and multiverse hijinks thanks to this masterwork of a film. As we left off in The Multiverse Saga, the God of Mischief had been betrayed by his version Sylvie, who had just broken the Marvel chronology utterly. The Time Variance Authority (TVA) forgot who Loki was after Sylvie’s activities in season 1, leaving us on a cliffhanger. Loki The first season was a breath of new air in the Marvel Cinematic Universe canon and an unexpectedly in-depth character study about mustering up the will to love oneself. The actual nature of Loki’s travels lent the programme a fantastic, John Carpenter–esque sci-fi atmosphere.
All of this was bolstered by Natalie Holt’s fantastic musical composition. Again, Quan is well-versed in the art of sweeping emotional storytelling since the series’ ideas and looks are quite similar to those of Everything Everywhere All at Once. Marvel hasn’t specified who Quan will play in the show, but Hiddleston confirmed at D23 that season two will continue off precisely where the chaos of season one left off, so expect Loki to return sometime in 2019. Besides Hiddleston and Quan, Season 2 features the acting talents of Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Sophia Di Martino, Wunmi Mosaku, and Rafael Casal.
Season 1 of Loki is now available to view on Disney+.
