At the D23 Expo, James Cameron said that development on Avatar 4 had begun. Cameron, who was in New Zealand, participated at the Expo remotely to discuss the sequels to Avatar. Cameron informed Expo attendees that production for Avatar 3 was still underway in addition to providing news about Avatar 4. Cameron said, “I’m super excited to be finally finishing up movie two. I know everyone’s been waiting a long time. Hopefully, we’ll show something today, and you can decide if it’s been worth it.” Avatar 2 is still in post-production, but it is “going well,” and the material from Weta looks “spectacular.”
After the new information about the sequel was shown, he showed 3D shots from Avatar 2 displaying Na’vi’s gorgeous and verdant homeland. The Na’vi were seen swimming in the water of Pandora while viewing a film of Dr Grace Augustine, played by Sigourney Weaver. It also depicted fighting in Pandora’s forests, a heated exchange between Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington, and further intertribal strife. Worthington, when speaking at the Expo, mentioned that both Saldana and his character are parents in the film. “We’ve learned that love and family are the foundation of what life is all about and are worth fighting for.”
Cameron’s Titanic was previously the highest-grossing film of all time, but the first Avatar film recently surpassed it.
The events of Avatar take place in the far future, in the year 2154 when the Earth’s natural resources have been exhausted. This motivates the human colonisation of the gas giant planet’s moon Pandora in order to extract the rare and expensive mineral known as Unobtainium. Moon natives, the Na’vi, are in danger due to mining and colonisation efforts. To communicate with the people of Pandora, a marine controls a Na’vi body that was genetically modified from afar. During his travels, he develops a newfound respect for the Na’vi and even falls in love with one of them.
As of this now, we’re looking at a December 18th, 2026 release date for Avatar 4. If you want to watch Avatar before it returns to cinemas in a restored edition before the second picture (due out on December 16, 2022) comes out, you may do so by renting or buying it from Amazon Prime Video.
