Human nature dictates that when in need of financial assistance, one will remember to contact the nasty, cantankerous, but affluent cousin. It’s unfortunate, but true, that we’re often more polite to those who assist us out than those who don’t. The Estate, a new comedic film, will go into this very topic. The film’s latest teaser depicts a greedy family at war with one another for the inheritance of a dying patriarch. The Estate is a British film directed and written by Dean Craig (who also created Death at a Funeral), about two sisters, Savanna (Anna Faris) and Macey (Toni Collette), who are in need of emergency funding to preserve their failing company.
They devise a plot to convince their cruel Aunt Hilda (Kathleen Turner) to include them in her bequest after learning of her terminal cancer diagnosis. They quickly learn, however, that they were not the only sharks to detect the presence of blood. In the first scene, Hilda’s sister and mother of Savanna and Macey express complete apathy about the impending death of her brother. By this point, it’s clear that nobody cares that the aunt’s time on earth is drawing to a close. Do you share my thoughts?” Savanna probes. Macey responds, “Aunt Hilda is never going to write us into her will,” showing that she understands her sister’s reasoning.
The younger of the two exclaims, “She doesn’t like us! She doesn’t like anybody!” Indeed, we meet Aunt Hilda, who is nothing if nasty and caustic, in the trailer. Although, the two sisters aren’t the only ones who are ready to put up with the sour old lady in her latter days. Beatrice, played by Rosemarie DeWitt, their cousin, travelled all the way from New York to help them out with their scheme. And it seems that other relatives, not only Beatrice, shared this view. The competition to win Aunt Hilda’s favour and her fortune have officially begun. The comedy features Billy Slaughter, David Duchovny, Ron Livingston, and Keyla Monterroso Mejia, and was produced by Signature Films, Capstone Studios, and Pretty Matches Productions.
On Friday, November 4, The Estate will be released in theatres.
