Bloody Disgusting claims that later this year, Scream Factory will release the 1978 monster film Piranha on 4K Ultra HD. The movie opens on November 1 and is currently available for pre-order. The original camera negative for the film has been used to create a 4K Ultra HD restoration that will allow viewers to experience the picture in a manner they never have before with breathtaking new clarity. The new version is not only an improvement over the previous one, but it also includes added material that fans may enjoy on the accompanying second disc. Director Joe Dante (Gremlins) and producer Jon Davison, as well as legendary B-movie producer Roger Corman, will each provide audio commentaries for the picture.
Extras for the film include “The Making Of Piranha,” which has interviews with the cast and crew, deleted sequences, behind-the-scenes material, picture galleries, bloopers, trailers, radio and TV advertisements, and more. Extra footage from the film’s TV broadcast premiere will also be included on the 4K Blu-ray. Fans have been waiting for the film to be released in 4K Ultra HD, and now they can buy it in a normal release or a collector’s edition that includes a limited-edition poster and five pins. After the unprecedented success of Jaws, which became the greatest earning picture of all time, a slew of creature films was released, including the original version of Piranha in 1978.
Despite negative reviews from some, the picture was commercially successful and spawned James Cameron’s directorial debut, 1982’s Piranha II: The Spawning. Due to its popularity and unique take on the genre, Piranha was reworked in 2010 as Piranha 3D to cash in on the craze for 3D at the time. With the movie’s new 4K Ultra HD release, viewers can finally see where it all began.
On November 1, Piranha will be made available to its many admirers.
