In addition to Diego Luna and Gael Garca Bernal, La Máquina will also star Eiza González. Hulu decided to pick up the boxing-themed miniseries earlier this year. González has reportedly agreed to star in the pugilistic Spanish-language series, according to Variety. The story will centre on Esteban (Garca Bernal), a seasoned boxer, and Luna, his manager, as they try to get him one final opportunity at the title before he retires.
However, a mysterious underground power stands in their way. González will portray Irasema, a promising sports writer who is also Esteban’s ex-wife and the mother of his two children. She and Esteban’s manager have been friends since they were kids. Her profession is characterised as a writer, and she “approaches boxing as more of an art form.” Eiza González made her English-language debut in From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series on the El Rey Network, reprising the part of vampire queen Santanico Pandemonium made famous by Salma Hayek in the 1996 film.
She has appeared in many high-profile movies since her blockbuster appearance in 2017’s Baby Driver, in which she and Jon Hamm played a larcenous team of lovers, including Fast & Furious Presents Hobbs & Shaw, Godzilla vs. Kong, and this year’s Ambulance, directed by Michael Bay. She has also published two albums, the most recent of which was in 2012. She is also a representative for several cosmetics firms, including Avon and Neutrogena. She will next be featured in the Apple anthology series Extrapolations, which focuses on the effects of climate change, and in the forthcoming Netflix adaptation of Liu Cixin’s science fiction book The Three-Body Problem.
The series will be produced by Luna and Garca Bernal’s La Corriente del Golfo. Having both broken through internationally in Alfonso Cuarón’s coming-of-age comedy-drama Y tu mamá también, the two celebrated performers have worked together frequently since. Writer, executive producer, and showrunner for La Máquina will be Marco Ramirez, who has worked on other Netflix shows including Orange is the New Black and Daredevil. Other executive producers include Gerardo Gatica, Leandro Halperin, Adam Fishbach, and Kyzza Terrazas. Series director Gabriel Ripstein (600 Miles, Narcos).
The Dropout, a miniseries on Elizabeth Holmes, was produced by Searchlight Television, and the network has other future projects including Mel Brooks’ History of the World, Part II and The Full Monty. There has been no word on when La Máquina will premiere on Hulu.
