Empire of Lights, an upcoming film directed by Sam Mendes, employs the same medium and has recently published several new photos. A trailer for the film’s imminent premiere was posted approximately a week ago, and it depicted a love tale whose protagonists met each other at a coastal theatre in 1980s England. Olivia Colman, Michael Ward, Toby Jones, and Colin Firth all had roles in Empire of Lights. Sam Mendes, who wrote & directed the film, and Roger Deakins, an Oscar-winning cinematographer, will work together again on Empire of Lights. Before Skyfall and 1917, they collaborated on another project.
There are four new photos available for Empire of Lights, all of which put the film’s stunning photography front and centre. The first photo is of Ward and Firth, who are both grinning broadly, and is typical of the group; the rest of the photographs portray Ward with other characters. Ward and Jones are shown in the second photograph adjusting a film projector, and in the third Ward is seen comforting a teary-eyed Colman at what appears to be a birthday party. The last shot is a cinematic depiction of two people taking in fireworks. The film’s official poster is based on this final artwork. This year’s Telluride Film Festival will have the global debut of Empire of Light, a film that has been nominated for several Oscars. Empire of Light is a collaborative effort between Mendes and his frequent partner Pippa Harris, who even acts as a producer on the film.
Winner of an Oscar, Sam Mendes made his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed American Beauty in 1999. Afterwards, Mendes went on to direct a string of critically acclaimed features like Road to Perdition, Jarhead, Revolutionary Road, and Spectre. Star Acclaimed for his roles in Top Boy and Blue Story, Micheal Ward will next be seen in the theatres in the forthcoming sports drama The Beautiful Game. Perhaps most notably, Colman starred in the 2018 Oscar-winning picture The Favourite and 2017 critically praised film The Lost Daughter; she will next be seen in the Marvel miniseries Secret Invasion as well as the films Wonka & Wicked Little Letters. There will be a theatrical release of Empire of Light in the United States on December 9 and in the United Kingdom on January 13, 2023.
