The Final Season of ‘Derry Girls’ Is Arriving on Netflix Next Month

We now know when American audiences can expect to see Derry Girls Season 3, the show’s last instalment. The show, which features Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Nicola Coughlan, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell, Louisa Harland, and Dylan Llewellyn, will reportedly debut on the streaming service on October 7. The official Netflix Twitter account tweeted, “The last season of our beloved Derry Girls premieres on Netflix (outside the UK & Ireland) on October 7.” It was always the intention to stop the programme after three seasons, and creator and writer Lisa McGee stated as much on Twitter last year.

McGee stated, “Derry Girls is a coming of age story…a love letter to the town I came from and the people who inspired me.” She went on to say that it was a pleasure to create the play and that she was happy with its success. The show debuted in January 2018 in the UK and Ireland, then in December 2018 on Netflix. The first season was well-received by both reviewers and viewers, earning a 100% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while the second season was given a 97% Certified Fresh rating.

In this 1990s-set series, we follow the lives of five young adults: Erin Quinn (Jackson), her cousin Orla (Harland), their pals Clare (Coughlan) and Michelle (O’Donnell), and Michelle’s nephew James (O’Donnell) (Llewellyn). Teens in Northern Ireland during the conclusion of the Troubles, a period of turmoil and sectarian bloodshed between Catholics and Protestants, struggle to navigate being adolescents, engaging in weird and ludicrous experiences, and maintaining a normal school schedule. Derry Girls features both historical political figures and archive material from the time of the Troubles.

It alludes to the IRA’s proclamation of a truce, Bill Clinton’s 1995 visit to Northern Ireland, and the Good Friday referendum (which marked the end of the Troubles). Season 3 finds our favourite characters, Erin, Orla, Clare, Michelle, and James, back together for one more go-around of hijinks and misadventures. For now, this is it for us,” McGee said on Twitter regarding the show’s cancellation. “Who knows whether Erin, Clare, Orla, Michelle, and James may return in some other shape someday.” While we patiently for Season 3, you can watch the first two seasons of Derry Girls on Netflix.
