The official trailer and key art for Paramount+’s upcoming original film On the Come Up have been unveiled. The film will mark the directorial debut of Sanaa Lathan, who has been nominated for an Emmy (Alien vs. Predator, Succession). Paramount+ will release the coming-of-age drama on September 23, 2022, following its international premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival. At Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards, audiences got their first look at the film’s trailer and key art.
The movie is being directed by Sanaa Lathan and is based on the #1 best-selling novel of the same name by Angie Thomas. The screenplay was written by Kay Oyegun. The tale of On the Come Up follows Bri, a 16-year-old brilliant rapper performed by newcomer Jamila C. Gray. She’s trying to make it big in the battle rap scene so that she may provide for her family and respect the memory of her father, a local hip hop legend whose career was cut short by gang violence. After her first big success is misappropriated, she must decide whether to change her identity to fit the standards of the music business, or whether to stick to being herself. Other than Gray, On the Come Up also has notable actors such as Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Lil Yachty, Mike Epps, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Justin Martin, Titus Makin, Michael Cooper Jr., GaTa, Sanaa Lathan, and Cliff “Method Man” Smith.
Thomas, George Tillman, Jr., Robert Teitel, Wyck Godfrey, Marty Bowen, Isaac Klausner, and Timothy M. Bourne are producing the picture, with John Fischer serving as executive producer. The picture is offered by Paramount+ in association with Paramount Pictures’ Players Label, and it was produced by State Street Pictures and Temple Hill. Beginning September 23rd, On the Come Up will debut first and only on Paramount+.
Synopsis
In ‘On the Come Up,’ we follow Bri, a talented 16-year-old rapper who wants to help her family and make a name for herself in the battle rap scene after her father, a local hip hop star, had his career cut short by gang violence. She’s caught between being true to the personality that brought her this far and adopting the fake character the music industry wants to impose on her when her first hit song goes viral for all the wrong reasons.
