The long-awaited return of Bill Nye the Science Guy has arrived with the premiere of his new series, The End is Nye. The programme, which Nye, Seth MacFarlane, and Brannon Braga created, puts everyone’s favourite scientific nerd in more dire scenarios in an effort to determine whether or not humanity can discover a way to survive, minimise, or escape them with just the means at its disposal. The film, entitled “Bill Nye and Seth MacFarlane Team Up to Stop the End of the World,” delves into the creation of the series, which began with MacFarlane wanting to team up with Nye for a series showcasing viewers the myriad horrific things that may go wrong on Earth.
According to Nye, the series was motivated by the idea, “Wouldn’t it be better if things were not disastrous?” rather than the intention to terrify viewers. Later, the film explains how Braga, a Star Trek vet who had previously collaborated with MacFarlane on his smash hit comedy The Orville, ensured that the show’s notions were grounded in reality. The show’s creators picked natural disasters that get a lot of attention but are often misunderstood, such as a supervolcano erupting or a solar flare, and used a straightforward episode structure to investigate them. Okun’s favourite part of the show is the moment when Nye is murdered after he has orchestrated the calamity and witnessed its unfolding. This is the worst-case scenario for Earth. However, The End is Nye was written with hope in mind, and its second half depicts Nye’s resurrection and the development of a scientifically sound strategy to avert the calamity and his own death. The ultimate objective is to encourage people to accept calamities while demonstrating that, with early preparation, these events need not be as devastating as they now are. The End is Nye is only the most recent in a long line of successful science shows from Bill Nye the Science Guy, which made him a household name in the ’90s.
Since then, he has made it his mission to make science accessible to people of all ages with programmes like StarTalk with fellow scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson and his own series, The Eyes of Nye, Stuff Happens, and Bill Nye Saves the World, among many more. Nye, Braga, and MacFarlane, along with Nye’s partner at Fuzzy Door productions, Erica Huggins, are the show’s executive producers. The show is organised and directed by Braga, and he also writes with Nye. The series was created by UCP and Universal Television Alternative Studio, both of which are part of the Universal Studio Group. The End is Nye has been released on Peacock with all six episodes.
