There has been much anticipation for Hulu’s The Devil in the White City adaption ever since it was revealed that Keanu Reeves will be playing the lead role. According to a Production Weekly ad, shooting on the eight-part series would begin in Chicago in March 2023. Despite the lack of a confirmed premiere date, this is sure to please Reeves’s legion of devoted fans. The Devil in the White City is based on Erik Larson’s bestselling nonfiction book of the same name, published in 2003. The narrative weaves together the lives of Daniel H. Burnham and H. H. Holmes.
For his work at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, Daniel H. Burnham became a household name in the architectural world of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. However, Holmes is commonly considered America’s first serial murderer, and his “murder castle” is legendary. Burnham is said to be played by Reeves, while Holmes has yet to be cast. In the eyes of Reeves’s many devoted admirers, his casting in the show is a major development. Although he is best recognised for his portrayal in John Wick, the possibility of eight episodes featuring Keanu Reeves in the lead character of Reeves has fans excited. However, in 1990’s Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, an animated series, he has his lone starring role to date.
Action films like The Matrix, Speed and the exciting John Wick trilogy have made Reeves a household name. His many devoted followers are eager to see him show off his acting abilities in a role that doesn’t need him to save the world or hold a pistol. The Devil in the White City adaptation has come a long way from its inception. Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese had been working on this project for years; in fact, Dicaprio purchased the book’s rights in 2010. Although DiCaprio and Scorsese’s involvement in the project had been announced at one point, the film’s trajectory has since shifted.
After realising that a single movie couldn’t do the narrative justice, executive producers Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese decided to turn the project into an eight-part series. Reeves is the only actor that has been publicly linked to the project thus far. Sam Shaw, who also serves as the showrunner, has written the series and will oversee production. Shaw previously developed Castle Rock, a show that was inspired by Stephen King’s work. It has also been announced that Little Children helmer Todd Field would direct a minimum of two episodes of the series. DiCaprio, Scorsese, Rick Yorn, Jennifer Davisson, Stacey Sher, Todd Field, Mark Lafferty, Shaw, and Keanu Reeves are among the series’ executive producers. Shooting for The Devil in the White City is set to start in March 2023, according to reports.
