Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters, the long-awaited follow-up to 2014’s smash hit, Godzilla vs. Kong, will delve into the backstory of Legendary’s MonsterVerse, as detailed in a new plot summary released by Warner Bros. Pictures. The unnamed follow-up to 2014’s Godzilla vs. Kong promises to delve into the history of the Titans and Skull Island as Kong and Godzilla team together to combat a new danger from Hollow Earth. The upcoming MonsterVerse film will reportedly include another team-up, with Kong and Godzilla joining forces to combat an unknown foe. As shown in the prior film, the two monster kings defeated the mechanical monster MechaGodzilla.
But before they became allies, they nearly died fighting one other, with Godzilla ultimately subduing Kong. While the monsters did band together to rescue the day, tensions remain, suggesting a possible rematch in the sequel. The new description for Godzilla vs. Kong also states that the sequel will continue delving into the MonsterVerse lore, providing some answers to questions raised by the first film in the crossover series. The events of Godzilla vs. Kong revealed that humans and Titans lived peacefully together for thousands of years, with the former constructing vast kingdoms under the surface of Hollow Earth. Kong’s Titan-killing axe is located there, but it is no match for Godzilla.
Despite this, the weapons provide fresh avenues for investigation in the MonsterVerse by showing that the fate of humans has always been entwined with the fate of gigantic animals. Warner Bros. Pictures has said that the sequel will explain the backstory of the Titans and their connection to Kong’s native Skull Island. All these revelations have the potential to alter humanity forever, making the stakes for the sequel quite high.
Director Adam Wingard returns for the follow-up after helming Godzilla vs. Kong. Terry Rossio (Godzilla vs. Kong), Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight), and Simon Barrett (You’re Next) penned the screenplay. Rebecca Hall (The Night House Resurrection), Brian Tyree Henry (Bullet Train, Atlanta), and Kaylee Hottle (not yet credited) will all reprise their roles in this as-yet-untitled film (Godzilla vs. Kong). Dan Stevens (Legion, Beauty and the Beast), Fala Chen (Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Alex Ferns (The Batman, Chornobyl), and Rachel House are among the newcomers to the cast (Thor: Ragnarok, Foundation).
On March 15, 2024, the sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong will roar into theatres.
