Prime Video announced in a tweet that work had begun on Jake Gyllenhaal’s updated version of the 1989 cult film Road House. The streamer posted a photo from the first day of filming, in which Gyllenhaal and director Doug Liman can be seen laughing and smiling behind the clapboard. In the new picture, which is now filming in the Dominican Republic, Gyllenhaal plays a former MMA fighter who works as a bouncer at a seedy Florida Keys bar.
As time goes by, however, he learns that this tropical paradise is not all that it looks. Besides Gyllenhaal, the cast includes Billy Magnussen, Lukas Gage, Hannah Love Lanier, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Daniela Melchior, and others. Conor McGregor, the champion of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, will make his cinematic debut in Road House. Sam Elliott played James Dalton’s mentor and friend, Wade Garrett, in the original drama alongside Patrick Swayze and Kelly Lynch as James Dalton and his love interest, Dr Elizabeth “Doc” Clay. In the film, Dalton plays the role of a professional “cooler” with an unknown history who is hired by the owner of the Double Deuce club in Missouri to handle security and maintenance.
As soon as Dalton takes over, he fires a large number of employees for stealing and drug trafficking, which causes him to clash with local tycoon Brad Wesley (Ben Gazzara). When Wesley lets Dalton know about his knowledge of his history, things take a turn for the worst and he feels pressured to join forces with Wesley. The film was only moderately successful at the box office when it was released, but it has since become an all-time classic. The Musical Road House premiered off-Broadway in 2003, and its sequel, also called Road House, was released on DVD in July 2006 under the title Road House 2.
Mini-comics writer Julia Gfrörer, artist Sean T. Collins, and artist Gretchen Felker-Martin created an adaptation of the film titled All Fuc***-Up: Tales from the Roadhouse (2020). Joel Silver, who was responsible for producing the first film, is also involved with the second. The executive producers will be JJ Hook, Alison Winter, and Aaron Auch. Gyllenhaal has been nominated for several awards, including the BAFTA and the Golden Globe. His filmography includes such titles as Nightcrawler, Broke Back Mountain, and Spider-Man: No Way Home from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Lake Success, Snow Blind, and Prophet are just a few of the future miniseries he’s directing. Liman has become famous for his several films, including Edge of Tomorrow and The Bourne Identity. Road House has not yet been given a release date.
