Photos from the forthcoming Prime Video psychological thriller Goodnight Mommy made their world debut in People magazine. The plot is based on a 2014 Austrian film of the same name, and it follows a pair of identical twins who grow suspicious of their mother after she goes out and gets some work done, then returns home with her face covered and acts quite differently than she did before. They begin to question whether or not the lady who disappeared is also the one who returned. Naomi Watts, who plays the main character, can be seen in the first photographs with her face covered in bandages, which appear significantly more sinister and balaclava-like than they actually are.
Images of Watts’ persona, still dressed creepily, reading to her kids are also included. The two-time Academy Award nominee discussed her approach to playing such a unique role in an interview with People. There is a part of myself that I have to uncover for every role I play, and who knows, maybe a long-suppressed portion may emerge. While there has been a consistent theme running through my work, I have made it a point to seek out parts that would expand my knowledge. Not that this was any different.
To be confronted by such a deep void of darkness was unsettling. Among the roles I’ve done, this one presented the greatest degree of difficulty. Some of her decisions were so out of character that it was difficult to relate to her. The first photographs also include Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti, who played Nicole Kidman and Alexander Skarsgard’s twin children in the critically acclaimed HBO series Big Little Lies. Cameron’s breakout performance as the hero’s son in Prime Video’s The Boys helped propel him to stardom, and his recurring presence on the programme will grow in Season 4 now that he has been upgraded to series regular. Directed by Matt Sobel, Goodnight Mommy is the director’s follow-up to his debut feature film, Take Me to the River (2015).
For the Netflix horror series Brand New Cherry Flavor, Sobel directed many episodes. Kyle Warren, who has worked on the Lethal Weapon TV series, penned the script for Goodnight Mommy. After screening at a number of film festivals, the original Austrian version of the narrative gained critical praise and a dedicated fanbase. When asked how he plans to set his film apart from the critically praised European film, Sobel said that tone will be crucial.
I recognised a chance to maintain the film’s signature blend of mystery and suspense with profound emotional depth while adding new issues we were eager to investigate. […] Our reworking places more emphasis on character and psychology, whereas the original focus more on tone and style. On September 16th, Goodnight, Mommy will make its debut on Prime Video.
