Daredevil, as Matt Murdock, is one of Marvel’s most well-known superheroes, and he operates on the streets. The blind hero was a lawyer by day and a crime-fighting vigilante by night, and he starred in his own Netflix series for three seasons before it was cancelled to make way for Disney+. Fans worried they might never see him again, but he made a brief appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, confirming his move to the MCU proper.
Daredevil is expected to appear in many forthcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe productions, including Spider-Man: Freshman Year, Echo, and this month’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, in addition to getting his own Disney+ series, Daredevil: Born Again.
Fans are excited to see Hell’s Kitchen’s finest hero again, and so is the creative team behind She-Hulk, but it’s unclear what role he’ll play in any of the series. During an interview, Jessica Gao, creator of She-Hulk, discussed the opportunity she had to incorporate Matt Murdock into the show, despite the fact that the tone of the half-hour legal comedy is completely different from the Netflix-turned-Disney+ series that first introduced him to audiences and the MCU. Gao and her team initially had no plans to work with Murdock since they thought he was too out there relative to the other Marvel characters they might employ.
The crew went crazy when they heard that Charlie Cox would be repeating his role as the Man Without Fear from the Netflix series, and they took a “snowball’s chance in hell” to include the vigilante in Jen’s tale. However, Daredevil was an exception. Typically, we scour the film and comic canons for a character we believe would be perfect for an episode, plot out the funniest and most appropriate method to incorporate them, and then approach Marvel for permission to utilise the character. In contrast, Daredevil existed only in a realm of fantasy. Oh, there’s no way, we thought.
Not even a thought could enter my mind. Our minds were never even on the possibility. One day we heard that not only was he a possibility, but that Charlie Cox would be reprising his role as Daredevil, and we immediately began plotting his return to the show. Even if there was no more possibility of getting him on our programme than catching a snowflake in a hat, we were going to take it. When questioned about working with Cox, who has played Matt Murdock since 2015, Gao sings his praises, noting not just his passion for the role but also his willingness to explore and lean into the more comical tone of She-Hulk as compared to the bleak dramatics of Daredevil and The Defenders: The figure is held in such high regard and adoration by him. He obviously had a deep connection to the role, but he was also game for some lighthearted fun. He was eager to continue interacting with Jen and She-Hulk in this lighthearted manner. It looks and acts just like the comic book hero. It was a lot of pleasure to see him in his natural element on the show. They both practise law and have superpowers. Nobody else shares that quality with them, I’d wager. Speculating about their relationship based on their individual traits was a lot of fun.
She-Hulk is available to watch now on Disney+, with new episodes debuting every Thursday.
