In its first weekend of release in the United States, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is expected to do well at the box office. The new animated picture, which premiered in the United States and Canada on August 19 and earned $10.7 million on its first day of release, is expected to earn $21 million over the course of the weekend, making it the highest-grossing film of the year so far. With its opening in 3,007 cinemas, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero became the most widely distributed anime film in history. On June 11, 2022, the film opened in Japan to an estimated 2.4 billion (approximately $18 million).
Idris Elba’s latest thriller, Beast, was also released on August 19, and it came in second place at the box office behind the new animated feature with a $4.2 million opening weekend from 3,743 screens, out of an estimated $10.1 million. Assuming an opening weekend gross of $21 million, it would be the second highest opening weekend gross for a foreign language film in the United States, behind only 2020’s Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train ($21.1 million). Dragon Ball Super: Broly opened at $9.8 million in 2018, thus this debut is a rise above that.
This was on par with the $18 million opening of another Funimation picture, March’s Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie. In Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, the second film to bear the “Super” moniker, beloved characters Piccolo and Gohan take against a pair of Androids named Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 that Dr Hedo produced for the Red Ribbon Army. The film received a B+ from critic Erick Massoto. Massoto called it “a pleasant movie that understands how to use its comedy and has fun with the battles, but it’s very mindful that you need to care about those people to enjoy the trip,” praising the film’s CG animation, script, and action scenes. The new Dragon Ball movie, Super Hero, has just hit cinemas.
