A new preview from Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming action-drama Samaritan shows an aged Sylvester Stallone in a different type of superhero role. The series premieres on August 26. The highly anticipated violent, superhero picture is directed by Australian filmmaker Julius Avery (Son of a Gun, Overlord), and it follows a little kid who discovers that his reclusive neighbour may well be the long-lost and mythical vigilante, known only as the Samaritan. Stallone’s character “Mr Smith,” now a trash guy, mistakenly displays superhuman power in front of a little girl played by Aria Seymore in the Samaritan scene titled “How Did You Do That?” (The Ms Pat Show).
A guy sneaks up on the cranky retired superhero and tries to knife him, but Stallone sends him flying through a wall and the tents lining the street, slamming into a car. This brief sequence is indicative of the widespread crime and anarchy that plague Granite City. When she inquires as to his methods, he claims the hole was previously present and that what she witnessed was an illusion. When an explosion goes off shortly after, he proves his point false by flipping the identical automobile over to shield himself and the girl. Starring with Stallone as the elderly man’s next-door neighbour, Sam Cleary (13), is Javon “Wanna” Walton (Euphoria, The Umbrella Academy).
Cleary believes Stallone’s character is disguising his actual identity. Though most citizens of Granite City have accepted the rumour that their super-powered hero was killed in a warehouse fire with his archenemy Nemesis, some, like Sam, are certain that he is still alive. Sam decides to save the city from certain destruction brought on by the rising crime rate by convincing his neighbour to come out of hiding. Pilou Asbaek (Overlord) plays Cyrus, Dascha Polanco (Orange is the New Black) plays Tiffany Cleary, Sophia Tatum (F9: The Fast Saga) plays Sil, Moises Arias (The Kings of Summer) plays Reza, Martin Starr (Freaks and Geeks) plays Albert Casler, Jared Odrick (Jade) plays Farshad, and Michael Aaron Milligan (Outer Banks) plays Arthur Holloway. The 2019 release of Bragi F. Schut’s (Escape Room, Season of the Witch) Samaritan was planned but delayed owing to the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus. The film’s original release date was moved around multiple times, but it will finally debut on Prime Video on August 26.
