The second season of The Sex Lives of College Girls has officially concluded filming, bringing us one step closer to returning to the world of Essex College. The showrunner, Justin Noble, initially announced the news with a clip posted on Instagram. The rest of the cast and crew quickly joined in the revelry, spreading the news of yet another successful shoot to all corners of the globe. Last year’s finale marked the debut of the inaugural season of The Sex Lives of College Girls.
The story follows four friends and roommates as they start their undergraduate careers at New England Essex University: Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet), Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott), Bela (Amrit Kaur), and Leighton (ReneĆ© Rapp). Each of the freshmen has to navigate her own unique set of academic, social, and other first-semester hurdles as she tries to find her niche at Essex. While we don’t know much about Season 2, the ending of the first season did leave some loose ends.
When we last left our housemates, they had either triumphed over adversity or been confronted with fresh challenges. Kimberly, a normally stellar student, first ran into trouble for cheating on an exam. Though she wasn’t officially kicked out of school, her scholarship was taken away, leaving her family in a similarly precarious financial position. But Bela’s main hobby is about to take a surprising and thrilling new turn.
Evangeline leaves The Catullan and approaches Bela about co-founding an all-female comedy club. Meanwhile, Whitney and Leighton are able to release some pent-up emotions. For starters, Leighton feels sad since his breakup with Alicia was so difficult. Kimberly provides whatever solace she can, and Leighton eventually comes out, a liberating moment even if it only affects one person. Whitney tells her mom about her romance with Dalton.
Whitney’s difficulty in expressing herself to her mother was a recurring theme throughout the season. This was a beautiful breakthrough and a new beginning for the couple. Noble and Mindy Kaling co-created the show, The Sex Lives of College Girls (Never Have I Ever, The Mindy Project). Renika Williams, Midori Francis, Christopher Meyer, Lauren “Lolo” Spencer, and Sierra Katow round out the cast as regulars with Ilia Isorel’s Paulino. Two cast members have changed places this season: Gavin Leatherwood has left the show, and Mitchell Slaggert has been cast in an as-yet-undefined role for Season 2.
Sarah Aubrey, the Head of Original Content for HBO Max, has previously spoken about her anticipation for Season 2 in the following terms: “The show’s creators, Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble have packed it with emotion, strong female friendships, and uncomfortable strip shows. We’re overjoyed that this hilariously forthright depiction of the college experience has struck a chord with everyone, sex experience or not. What’s in store for these remarkably multifaceted, but approachable, protagonists is just riveting.” Dates for the premiere of Season 2 of The Sex Lives of College Girls have not been set. You can watch the first season right now on HBO Max.
