Amy Ryan, who has been nominated for an Oscar, has joined the lead cast of the upcoming Apple TV+ series Sugar. This comes after it was revealed that Kirby Howell-Baptiste, who played The Sandman’s Melanie in the film, will be starring alongside Colin Farrell in the new series. Details on Sugar’s plot are scant at the moment, although the programme is being billed as a contemporary detective narrative set in Los Angeles. Mark Protosevich developed the Apple Studios original Sugar. Protosevich’s resume includes co-writing the scripts for blockbuster movies including “I Am Legend,” “Thor,” and “Oldboy” by Spike Lee.
Director Fernando Meirelles, whose work includes the Oscar-nominated features The Constant Gardener, Blindness, and The Two Popes, will helm the first original series on Apple TV+. Meirelles, along with Simon Kinberg, Audrey Chon, Scott Greenberg, and Chip Vucelich, will serve as executive producers on the project. Ryan received an Oscar nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for her depiction of heartbroken mother Helene McCready in the film Gone Baby Gone. Ryan’s career has skyrocketed since her breakthrough role in Gone Baby Gone, with credits including Changeling, Jack Goes Boating, Birdman, Bridge of Spies, Beautiful Boy, and Lost Girls.
Ryan may presently be seen in the role of Jan on the smash Hulu comedy-mystery series Only Murders in the Building. Ryan will be seen next with Joaquin Phoenix in Ari Aster’s newest film, Disappointment Blvd. Sugar appears to have quite a bit of talent tied to it, what with Ryan and her two currently announced co-stars. Farrell has starred in a number of critically acclaimed films, including Phone Booth, In Bruges, Horrible Bosses, The Lobster, and most recently, The Batman, which was released earlier this year. Farrell’s latest feature, Thirteen Lives, is available to stream on Prime Video, and he will soon be seen in the movies The Banshees of Inisherin and Love Child, as well as an unnamed Batman series.
Howell-acting Baptiste’s resume includes roles in The Sandman, as well as the TV programmes The Good Place, Barry, and Killing Eve, and the movies Mr Harrigan’s Phone and She Taught Love. Earlier reports said that Apple TV+ outbid Netflix for Sugar. Apple TV+ and executive producer Kinberg have worked together before on the sci-fi series Invasion, which Kinberg also co-created. Sugar is the creation of Genre Films, Kinberg’s production firm. Apple TV+ has just ordered many programmes, and Sugar is one of them. In addition to the unnamed Damien Chazelle drama series, Apple TV+ will also feature the biographical drama Ferrari, the science fiction miniseries Metropolis, the fantasy adventure remake Time Bandits, and more. As of right now, we don’t know a whole lot more about Sugar.
