Numerous hints have been dropped during the current arc of Dragon Ball Super that the galactic dictator Frieza would be making a return in chapter 87. One of Frieza’s hallmark attacks is previewed in an official manga preview for the next chapter in the Granolah the Survivor Arc. Frieza, an extraterrestrial ruler who was feared across the galaxy and reigned over many worlds before being defeated by Goku on Planet Namek, is one of the most well-known adversaries in the Dragon Ball franchise. Frieza, who was defeated in the original Dragon Ball manga but resurrected in Dragon Ball Super, gained a new fan base after making an appearance in the Resurrection of F movie and then again in the manga as both an opponent and an odd ally during the Tournament of Power arc.
Frieza’s role with the Heeters, a gang of space criminals who sell planets for profit after killing or enslaving their populations, was revealed in the Granolah tale. Although the Heeters successfully picked up where Frieza left off after his death on Namek, they are now understandably terrified by Frieza’s reappearance. So that when the time comes, Elec, leader of the Heeters, can dispatch Frieza, he had his younger brother Gas train with the Dragon Balls of planet Cereal. In the final moments of Dragon Ball Super, chapter 86, Goku, Vegeta, and a reformed Granolah work together to destroy Gas.
However, it appears that the warriors cannot yet rejoice, as seen by the official preview for chapter 87 released by the manga’s creator Toyotaro and translated by Twitter user and source of Dragon Ball news @DBSChronicles. Namekian Monaito is tending to his adopted kid Granolah when he gets stabbed in the back by a familiar energy beam. There is no indication of who is firing in the preview, but the attack resembles Frieza’s “Death Beam,” in which the villain fires a focused beam of ki from his index finger at high speed. Similar to the action in the Dragon Ball Super trailer, Frieza has previously used the speed and devastating force of his Death Beam to abruptly kill several opponents.
These include Piccolo, Vegeta, and the Namekian Dende. Frieza knew that some Namekians (like Dende and Monaito) had the ability to heal others, so he targeted Dende first. Perhaps something similar occurred on Planet Cereal. Frieza may have sought to eliminate Cereal’s Dragon Balls’ inventor because he didn’t want anybody else to feel pressured into aspiring to be the strongest being in the universe. Although the villain’s arrival is probably tied to his war with the Heeters, it remains a mystery as to why he went after Monaito instead of Gas, Elec, or his sworn nemesis Goku, who dealt Frieza his greatest defeat. We’ll get to see if Frieza got stronger after the Tournament of Power if he actually shows up in chapter 87.
Since Goku and Vegeta can now employ Ultra Instinct and Ultra Ego, their combined strength should be sufficient to defeat Golden Frieza. When the whole chapter of Dragon Ball Super finally drops, viewers will finally know if the fan-favourite villain Frieza has returned.
