The first poster for the upcoming science fiction romantic comedy Molli & Max in the Future features the film’s leads, played by Zosia Mamet (The Flight Attendant and Girls) and Aristotle Athari (Saturday Night Live), in front of a futuristic cityscape. The duo looks to be deeply involved in the discussion as they have lunch together against a future New York City backdrop complete with holographic advertisements adorning the tall skyscrapers.
While the futuristic backdrop nods toward the future, the plain clothing and the use of chopsticks to eat out of Chinese takeout cartons place them firmly in the present. According to Deadline, Michael Lukk Litwak’s debut feature film takes place a billion years in the future. Molli & Max in the Future will borrow visual effects methods from Disney+’s smash hit Star Wars series The Mandalorian in order to accurately portray the ludicrous future setting of the relationship.
The film’s primary filming was completed, and it is presently in post-production; Litwak wrote the script. Max (Atharia), who thinks that people can and do change, and Molli (Mamet), who doesn’t fall in love with Molli & Max in the Future. They’ve been together for 10 years, visited six planets, and four dimensions, and joined one space cult, all while proving each other right. In addition to the leads, the cast features Matteo Lane (stand-up comedy), Erin Darke (Good Girls Revolt), Grace Kuhlenschmidt (Search Party), Arturo Castro (Broad City), Michael Chernus (Severance), Aparna Nancherla (BoJack Horseman), Okieriete Onaodowan (Broadway’s Hamilton), Paloma Garcia-Lee (Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story), and Danny Burstein (Broadway). In her first major role, as Shoshanna Shapiro on HBO’s Girls, Zosia Mamet launched her career. Now she co-stars with Kaley Cuoco in another hit show, The Flight Attendant, on HBO Max.
Mamet has also joined the cast of Madame Web, a female-led superhero film produced by Sony and Marvel and starring Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney. Most people recognise Athari from his role as Gabe on HBO’s Silicon Valley, but he will also be a notable addition to the SNL cast in 2021 according to his recent casting. In addition, he portrays Derrick on The Coop, an Eko original series. Athari has directed a number of TV specials and shorts.
Molli & Max in the Future is the brainchild of Ben J. Murphy, Candice Kuwahara, Mallory Schwartz, Litwak, and casting director Kate Geller, and is the result of a collaboration between Whiskey Bear Productions, Senior Post, The Family, and Choreografx. Josh Senior, Jeanne Elfant Festa, Luke Murphy, and Nicole Murphy serve as executive producers, and Ted Geoghegan and Ivy Lam co-produce the picture.
