It has now been revealed that the trailer for Catherine, Called Birdy, which stars Game of Thrones actress Bella Ramsey, has been released by Prime Video. Birdy, a 14-year-old protagonist, is played by Ramsey in the film. Based on Karen Cushman’s best-selling historical children’s novel of the same name, Catherine, Called Birdy is directed and written by Emmy nominee and outspoken feminist Lena Dunham.
Set in mediaeval England, Catherine (Ramsey), who likes to go by the alias Birdy, is a clever youngster who does her best to keep her father, Sir Rollo (Andrew Scott), from marrying any of the wealthy suitors he wants her to. As seen in the trailer, this historical comedy has a strong female empowerment theme that is contrary to the attitudes of the time in which it is set. You can see how Birdy and her father had a falling out because he insists on marrying her off to get money. When one of her suitors, played by Russell Brand, shows up, Birdy has a way of scaring him away by telling him that “Lady Catherine” has a third spare ear.
Birdy is a tomboyish and self-described crafty girl who will do anything to escape getting wed off to someone. Additionally, Lesley Sharp, Sophie Okonedo, Joe Alwyn, Isis Hainsworth and Dean-Charles Chapman also feature in the PG-13-rated film. Wallett, Eric Fellner, Tim Bevan, and Jo Wallett were the producers of Dunham’s film. The world premiere of Catherine, Called Birdy will take place during the Toronto International Film Festival. On September 23, it will be released in theatres, and on October 7, it will be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.
Synopsis
“It’s 1290, I believe. Lady Catherine (often referred to as Birdy) is the youngest of Lord Rollo and Lady Aislinn’s three children in the English Medieval hamlet of Stonebridge. Stonebridge Manor, a dilapidated mansion that resembles the family, is her favourite place to play. Rollo, a penniless and immensely selfish father, views his daughter as his ticket out of financial devastation by marrying her off to a wealthy guy for money and land. With her sprightly demeanour and ability to defuse each potential suitor in novel ways, Birdy is a typical teenage heroine. Her inventiveness, rebellion, and profound confidence in her own right to freedom set her on a collision path with her parents. – Their love for their daughter is put to the ultimate test when a repulsive suitor comes.”
