Some of Sony Pictures Classics’ most anticipated dramas, including Living, Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams and The Son, have been given release dates ahead of the 2018 awards season. Hugh Jackman’s character Logan (Logan) attempts to be a better parent in the latter film. The official release date has been set for November 11 by the film’s production company. That the film will be released in the latter half of 2022 indicates that Sony Pictures Classics is confident in the film’s ability to get notice and, maybe, accolades in the early part of 2023.
No one can deny that The Son’s star-studded cast will help it stand out: Oscar-nominated and Tony-winning actor Hugh Jackman is only one of the film’s many notable cast members, including two-time Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins, Academy Award and Emmy-winning actress Laura Dern, and Academy Award nominee Vanessa Kirby (Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One). Florian Zeller, an award-winning dramatist, directs this stellar cast.
The Father, featuring Hopkins and Olivia Colman, was the French filmmaker’s stage adaptation in 2020. It was released in theatres that year (Heartstopper). The film received worldwide praise for its gut-wrenching and imaginative depiction of Alzheimer’s disease. Following The Father, The Son is a stage adaptation of the novel. This will be Hopkins’ second collaboration with the filmmaker after winning the Best Actor Oscar in 2021 for his part in The Father. “I couldn’t create another film without Anthony,” Zeller said at the time of his casting. A role in The Son was “created specifically for him,” Hopkins was the first to see the screenplay, according to the director.
Christopher Hampton, the two-time Oscar winner for his screenplays for Atonement, A Dangerous Method, and Dangerous Liaisons, adapts The Son’s script for the big screen. They are part of a family drama trilogy in the theatre, which suggests that Zeller and Hampton may collaborate on a film adaptation of The Mother, which has been hailed as one of the best plays ever written. On November 11, The Son will open in cinemas.
