The ‘Paranormal Activity’ Film Franchise Is Dead to Jason Blum

According to Variety, after the success of last year’s Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum hinted at the Locarno Film Festival that the series’ last instalment will be released in 2023. The situation has reached a breaking point. Blum stated, “That most recent Paranormal Activity film was dreadful. Due to just owning the rights to three Halloween films, we had to declare “Halloween Is Over!” At least for Blumhouse, this is the end of it. Sometimes you know it’s time to put something to rest because you just have a feeling about it. If a filmmaker I admire, say, Scott Derrickson, were to say, “I have a terrific concept for a Paranormal Activity movie,” then I would be interested in seeing it return.

However, at the present time, that is not something I am interested in doing. Blum has hinted that the Paranormal Activity franchise may return at some point, but the series seems likely to remain on pause beyond the release of the next film, which has yet to be announced. Blum has been in the news recently for his views on the Paranormal Activity franchise, but he has also hinted at other impending projects, including The Exorcist trilogy, which he will produce and is set to direct alongside David Gordon Green. We’re getting ready to make it. With any luck, we can make “The Exorcist” as exciting and worthwhile to see again as we did with “Halloween.”

The future project “feels distinct enough that people are delighted we did it,” Blum added. The first Paranormal Activity movie was released in 2007 and received favourable reviews for its use of the discovered footage genre and its suspenseful scares, both of which were inspired by films like The Blair Witch Project. Paranormal Activity was so successful that it spawned three yearly sequels: Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014; 3D), Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension (2015; 3D), and Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin (2016; Paramount+). While many audiences enjoyed the first picture upon its premiere, subsequent instalments garnered lukewarm at best and often terrible reviews.

Fans continued to go to theatres in droves despite the franchise’s lukewarm response to the sequels. As Paranormal Activity prepares to go on hiatus, the last instalment will soon be released so that fans may have one more fright from the franchise. There is currently no date planned for the release of Paranormal Activity 8, the eighth film in the series. Film buffs may watch every feature on Paramount+.
