Untold, a sports documentary series, will return to Netflix later this month for a second season, the streaming service said Monday. Again, each episode will focus on a new topic, and the show will feature frank discussions with athletes who have been at the centre of controversial headline-making scandals. The first season starred Mardy Fish, Caitlyn Jenner, Christy Martin, and James Galante. The third will be dubbed “Operation Flagrant Foul,” and it will focus on NBA referee Tim Donaghy, who became the centre of attention after it was revealed that he was involved in a gambling scam involving his own games.
Donaghy says, “f—” his life up, plain and simple, in the teaser for the new season. The teaser also suggests that, since the guilty are more likely to shift blame, the episodes will feature testimony from third parties to help viewers sort out the truth from fiction. Although this is a large topic that has drawn the attention of the FBI, it is still preferable to hear the tale from the individual who was directly engaged. It’s anyone’s guess what they may possibly show. The new episodes of Untold, a weekly series of short documentaries, start with this one. As of 2021, Netflix has already announced that the first two episodes of Season 2 will be a two-parter centred on NFL linebacker Manti Te’o, who was catfished into a relationship with a girlfriend who was reportedly suffering leukaemia.
The two-part episode will follow the format of the other episodes in the series by including interviews with both the athlete and the person who catfished him. In an interview with IndieWire, directing pair Chapman Way and Maclain Way discussed the series’ inception and their criteria for choosing episode themes. “We spoke to many athletes and read many accounts, and I believe the primary criterion was that we need athletes who are prepared to do warts-and-all storytelling, including the good, the terrible, and the ugly. Those with hidden motives or who are only acting in order to gain favour with others are easy to spot. This isn’t necessarily indicative of the most interesting stories.
It was crucial for us as documentary filmmakers to identify athletes who were willing to be completely honest and open with us. Beginning this coming Tuesday, August 16th, new episodes of Season 2 of Untold will be made available on Netflix every Tuesday.
