Madelaine Petsch, who starred in Riverdale, is making the transition from television to the big screen with her upcoming role in the mystery thriller Jane. In the forthcoming film, Petsch plays a driven teen whose loss gradually consumes him. Petsch and Creator+ have released the film’s official trailer in anticipation of its debut later this month. Beginning with Olivia (played by Petsch), the video reveals that she has a regimented routine in the hopes of getting into her preferred high school. Olivia is having a hard time, and the dreary palette and foreboding score just add to that impression.
The audience then meets Olivia’s friend Izzy (Chlöe Bailey), who hurts both of them by revealing something to her. As the film progresses, it becomes clear that anybody may be the perpetrator of the heinous crime that surrounds a child called Jane. Melissa Leo, who attempts to calm Olivia down when she freaks out, gets some screen time in the teaser as well.
As detailed in Creator+’s official summary, the film is about, “Olivia, a seemingly ideal senior in high school, is struggling with sadness at the recent death of a friend. After being delayed from her first choice university, she begins to spiral and endure a series of progressively terrifying panic episodes. To feel safe again, she unleashes a social media-driven vengeance on those who stand in her way of success, but as the situation worsens, she is forced to face — and finally embrace — her worst instincts to succeed.” Petsch has experienced excitement like that depicted in the Jane teaser before.
Petsch has been a part of many strange mysteries on Riverdale thanks to her role as Cheryl Blossom, from investigating the death of Cheryl’s brother to taking on a centuries-old sorcerer with a grudge. Petsch fans who can’t wait for the impending seventh season of Riverdale will find a natural progression in Jane. Petsch tweeted her delight, writing, “this has been my baby for 2 years & it means the world to share it with you!!” Sabrina Jaglom co-wrote Jane with Rishi Rajani and helmed the film. Together with Deborah Liebling, Nick Phillips, and Adam Wescott, Petsch is the show’s producer. Ian Owens, Chloe Yu, Grayson Berry, Cecile Cubiló, Jordyn Aurora Aquino, and Nina Bloomgarden all appear in the film.
On August 26th, Jane will debut in select AMC theatres and on September 19th, Creator+ will stream the film.
