The Killer, John Woo’s 1989 criminal film, will provide the inspiration for a new Peacock exclusive series starring Lupin’s Omar Sy. Chow Yun-fat played the role of Ah Jong, an assassin who inadvertently shoots and blinds the famous singer Jennie (Sally Yeh) in the original film. Jong is eager to leave the murdering world behind, but he cannot refuse the opportunity to carry out one more hit in order to pay for Jennie’s sight-restoring operation.
The new season, directed by Woo, will premiere in 2023.
Scriptwriters Eran Creevy (Welcome to the Punch), Matthew Stuecken and Josh Campbell (10 Cloverfield Lane, Covenant, Knights of the Zodiac), and Brian Helgeland (Welcome to the Punch, Collide, Shifty) worked together on the film (L.A. Confidential, Legend, Spenser Confidential). The Killer was nominated for many awards at the 9th annual Hong King Film Awards, where Woo ultimately took home the trophy for Best Director.
A new version of the movie has been in the works since 1992, but it has been stuck in preproduction for the better part of three decades. Sy now portrays Assane Diop, a guy who is motivated by the exploits of Maurice Leblanc’s master thief character Arsene Lupin, in Netflix’s Lupin.
The third season of the Golden Globe-nominated show is presently under production. The Untouchables, in which Sy starred, was a huge financial success in France and earned the actor a nomination for the top acting prize at the 2011 Cesar Awards.
