Seth Rogen’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated film has a title, but it won’t be released to theatres for another year. The news was accompanied by a brand-new logo designed in the manner of the original animation, using bold red writing and the word turtles written in green with a cracked, pointed style evocative of graffiti. Below is the film’s title, Mutant Mayhem, which looks like it was recently taken from the sewers and is covered in green hazardous sludge. The title of Rogen’s film is straightforward and thematically appropriate, setting the stage for the excitement of the newest Turtles movie. The new logo is great on its own, but it truly stands out as part of the film’s custom mural.
Against a purple background with crude graffiti of the turtles and classic phrases like “Turtles Rule” and “Heroes in a Halfshell,” it oozes nostalgia and sets up the animated feature as a return to the franchise’s roots. There’s little doubt that this marks a change from the gritty tone of Michael Bay’s live-action Turtles movies. Since its inception as a sequel to Michael Bay’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, Mutant Mayhem has undergone significant development.
In 2018, Rogen and his production company, Point Grey Pictures, bought the rights to the film and decided to turn it into a CGI animated movie. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows came out in 2016, therefore this new film will be the first big-screen appearance for the Turtles since then. In an interview, Rogen explained that, as a specialist in the coming-of-age tale, he wanted to utilise this incarnation of the turtles to highlight the adolescent years of the original series, demonstrating how Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael, and Leonardo develop into their own unique characters. Point Grey, where Rogen and his The Boys co-star hung together James Weaver and Evan Goldberg are the film’s producers.
Directed by Jeff Rowe, fresh off his hit with The Mitchells vs. the Machines, the film will have a screenplay by Brendan O’Brian. Unknown at this time is the film’s cast members, but the team behind the project is packed with ability. There has been a lot for TMNT fans to shout “Cowabunga!” over recently.
In addition to Rogen’s movie, on August 5 a new instalment in the Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles world will be released, with the focus being on the villains (from Shredder to Bebop and Rocksteady and everyone in between). Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is a worthy successor to the original arcade beat ’em up, and it even has some of the original voice actors from the animated series. August 4, 2023, is the projected release date for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.
