It’s been a rough few days for DC fans, and it appears like Warner Bros.’ new CEO, David Zaslav, has more blows planned. Despite all the attention given to DC’s surprise termination of Batgirl, the future of other DC projects including The Flash is also in doubt. There has been talking that the Supergirl spin-off film starring Sasha Calle may not be happening, despite the fact that the main movie is still scheduled for a 2023 release.
This is an excerpt from a much longer Rolling Stone piece that discussed the Batgirl dilemma and the DCEU’s present trajectory.
They are reported as saying something along the lines of, “Now, the threat of further DC pictures being crushed looms. Sources believe it’s highly unlikely that the currently-in-development Supergirl will be greenlit. So yet, this is the only rumour we’ve heard about what may happen to Supergirl. They then note that Calle will make her first appearance in the role in the aforementioned Flash movie. However, that movie has its own issues at the moment.
The recent erratic conduct and arrests of star Ezra Miller has put the production in an untenable situation, and that’s before we even get into the fact that Flash has been in development limbo for the previous decade and has gone through many directors. Some viewers may have assumed that Flash would be the next victim after hearing about Batgirl. Again, though, the release of Flash remains on schedule because the movie is too large for WB to trash. The iconic Flashpoint plot will be brought to the big screen, and Michael Keaton’s Batman will make a comeback in that movie.
But what’s even more noteworthy is that Calle will be the first female Supergirl to don the iconic red cape since Helen Slater in 1984’s disappointing Supergirl: The Movie. Although the Girl of Steel enjoyed a long-running TV series on the CW, she has had little luck in the movies. Calle’s Supergirl appears to have a significant part in The Flash, but her appearance has been overshadowed by the show’s internal conflict. Calle’s breakout role will be as Supergirl, and it seems like only yesterday that DC posted the video of the actress receiving the casting news. Her expression of delight said it all.
Fans’ excitement for Calle’s interpretation of Superman has been amplified by the several previews of her outfit, which is a dead ringer for Henry Cavill’s super suit. Hopefully, WB will reconsider when fans watch The Flash with Calle in the role next year. Include her in a major motion picture like Man of Steel 2 or something. The DC fandom is now on tenterhooks, waiting for the next pronouncement of impending catastrophe. Unfortunately, at this point, all we can do for Calle’s Supergirl and the DCEU as a whole is hope for better times.
On June 23, 2023, The Flash will premiere in cinemas. To tide you over until that time-travelling adventure gives us a clearer idea of the future of the universe, you can watch all the existing DCEU flicks in rapid succession on HBO Max right now.
