Omar Sy has been tapped to star in Universal’s remake of John Woo’s The Killer (1989) for the Peacock streaming service. There is currently no official information available on the reimagining’s narrative or specific changes that will be made to the original film. French actor Sy became well-known thanks to his performance in the 2011 comedy-drama The Intouchables. As a result of his performance in the film, he became the first actor of African descent to receive the Cesar Award for Best Actor.
Following this success, he went on to star in films like Jurassic World and X-Men: Days of Future Past, both popular American franchises. The French detective drama Lupin is the most recent medium in which he has appeared. Woo is a filmmaker, producer, and writer in Hong Kong. The Killer, Face/Off, and Mission: Impossible 2 are three of his most well-known action films in the United States. Throughout his lengthy career, he has earned a number of prestigious honours, including the Saturn Award for Best Director in 1997 for his work on Face/Off. In addition to his filmography, he also has a comic book series to his credit: Seven Brothers. He is now running Lion Rock Productions, his own film studio.
The protagonist of the 1989 crime drama The Killer is an assassin named Ah Jong who intends to retire after completing his final mission. During a gunfight with several thugs, however, he inadvertently blinds a nightclub singer named Jennie, putting him in a sticky predicament. After learning that the singer is not only blind but also cannot afford the operation necessary to restore her sight, Jong decides to put off retirement and accept a new career in order to make amends and aid the singer.
Things don’t go as the hitman had hoped, and his final assignment may prove to be more difficult than he had anticipated. Woo will be making his directorial and producing debut once again. Screenplay credit goes to Eran Creevy (Welcome to the Punch, Collide), Matthew Stuecken (10 Cloverfield Lane), and Brian Helgeland (42, Legend). Sara Scott, Universal’s Senior Vice President of Production Development, and Jacqueline Garell, the studio’s Creative Development Executive, are overseeing production. Fans of both Sy’s acting skills and Woo’s canon will be eager to see how the remake pans out for contemporary viewers. Seeing what the filmmaker has opted to alter from his original 1980s hit will be exciting.
