The next Toronto International Film Festival promises to be “Weird.” Naturally, when we say “strange,” we’re referring to the humorous singer Weird Al Yankovic, whose biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story will have its world premiere at the prestigious film festival. The world premiere of the movie will take place at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Thursday, September 8, 2022, as part of the festival’s Midnight Madness programme.
If you can’t make it to the debut on November 4, 2022, you can still watch Weird: The Al Yankovic Story on Friday, exclusively on The Roku Channel. The Roku Channel published a new teaser trailer for the film alongside the news of its TIFF debut, featuring Daniel Radcliffe in the lead role of the amazing and legendary Yankovic. The new preview provides a look inside the remarkable life of everyone’s favourite novelty artist and his undying love for accordions.
The trailer kicks off with a view of a throbbing concert crowd while the band plays an introduction, which is par for the course in a film about a musician. Then we see the guy himself, Al, his curly hair and moustache, as he faces the crowd with insane pleasure with his trademark accordion to perform for them. Like the artist, the new trailer isn’t too serious about itself. That’s to be anticipated, seeing that Yankovic co-wrote the picture with director Eric Appel. Yankovic, known for his satirical songs like “Like a Surgeon,” “White and Nerdy,” and “Amish Paradise,” will have his life and career chronicled in this film for the first time.
The film will reveal Yankovic not just as the moustachioed novelty artist we all know and adore, but also as the guy behind the music with a more serious side. Radcliffe’s co-stars include the likes of Evan Rachel Wood, Quinta Brunson, and Rainn Wilson, among many other super A-listers who have yet to announce their involvement. The movie was directed by Eric Appel, and he also wrote the script alongside Yankovic. Funny Or Die and Tango are the film’s producers. On November 4, 2022, at 8 p.m. EST, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story will premiere on The Roku Channel.
