Gordita Chronicles has been cancelled by HBO Max after one season, according to Deadline. Over a month ago, the first season of the show was available on the site. As a chubby Dominican girl in the 1980s, Cucu “Gordita” Castelli’s family relocates from Santo Domingo to Miami, Florida due to her father’s new work. Gordita Chronicles follows her life as she recounts her memories of her childhood in a flashback. An immigrant family from the Dominican Republic struggles to succeed in the United States, and Gordita’s quirky family struggles against the odds to achieve the “American Dream.”
It was well-received by both the critics and the general public. When asked by Deadline about the channel’s programming move and the regrettable choice to end Gordita Chronicles, a streamer spokeswoman said: There will be no live-action kids and family content on HBO Max, therefore we’ve had to make the tough choice to stop Gordita Chronicles at HBO. To bring Cucu’s story to life on the small screen, we worked together with the show’s creator Claudia Forestieri and our two executive producers, Eva Longoria (who directed the pilot) and Zoe Saldaa.
We owe a debt of gratitude to them and the rest of the outstanding cast and crew for putting together such an emotional and ground-breaking production that appealed to a wide audience. Eva Longoria and Zoe Saldaa, the show’s executive producers, expressed their sadness at the news, saying: A second season for Gordita Chronicles will not be possible because of HBO Max’s bigger changes in programming, which will not allow the show to return to its previous home. We are devastated.
We’re very happy to have been a part of this since as producers and storytellers, we’re always on the lookout for tales that show off the best of our neighbourhood and its people. Positive critical reception and increasing viewership show that people value this show’s presence as well as the important need it fills in the media landscape for Latinx material, and we’re always amazed by this. Claudia Forestieri, who wrote the pilot and was executive producer, developed the series. With Jennifer Robinson and Chris King of Osprey Productions, Josh Berman was also an executive producer.
Bons Mots Emporium’s executive producer and showrunner were Brigitte Munoz-Liebowitz. For UnbeliEVAble, Longoria worked as the executive producer and director of the pilot. Cinestar Pictures’ executive producers were Saldaa, Mariel Saldana, and Cisely Saldaa.
Olivia Goncalves played Cucu Castelli, Cosette Hauer played Ashley Bell, Juan Javier Cardenas played Victor Castelli, Savannah Nicole Ruiz played Emilia, and Diana-Maria Riva played Adela Castelli, among others, in Gordita Chronicles. Even though the announcement was disappointing, HBO has acknowledged that it does not have immediate plans to resume producing live-action family and children’s programmes. This means that these episodes might return to the HBO Max video collection in the future. In the meanwhile, you may watch Gordita Chronicles Season 1 to catch up.
