Michael Mann has had an eventful year. The famed filmmaker released his latest feature, Blackhat, in 2015, seven years ago, but he isn’t short of projects. We are only a few days away from the release of Mann’s debut novel, Heat 2, which he co-wrote with Meg Gardiner and intends to film at some point, and HBO Max’s Tokyo Vice, which has been renewed for a second season. Despite all this, Mann is hard at work on his new movie, Ferrari, which has gathered a stellar ensemble. Adam Driver, Penelope Cruz, Shailene Woodley, and Gabriel Leone will play supporting parts in the film, which is based on a sports car company.
Sarah Gadon, Patrick Dempsey, and Jack O’Connell have been cast in key roles as the film nears its August premiere date. Peter Collins, the late British racing car driver, will be played by O’Connell, while Piero Taruffi, a fellow race car driver, will be played by Dempsey. Besides that, Gadon has been cast as Linda Christian, a film actress. No word yet on the significance of these three actors’ inclusion in the next film, but stay tuned for additional casting news in the coming days and weeks. As a former racing car driver, Ferrari (Driver) finds himself in a financial and emotional crisis in the summer of 1957 in the forthcoming biopic. Ferrari is fighting for his own well-being at the same time as his firm is in financial peril. Because of the death of one son and the strained connection between him and his other son, his marriage to Woodley is in jeopardy.
When faced with such dire circumstances, Ferrari decided to defy the odds and wager on one important event: the storied Mille Miglia, a 1,000-mile race through Italy. Adapted from Brock Yates’ 1991 book, Enzo Ferrari — The Man and the Machine, the film will be co-written by Troy Kennedy Martin and produced by P.J. van Sandwijk, John Lesher, Lars Sylvest, Thorsten Schumacher and Gareth West. Niels Juul will serve as the executive producer. Mann has spent a long time bringing this film to the big screen. Twenty years in fact. Hopefully, once the film’s long-awaited production begins, we’ll get a clearer glimpse at what Mann has in mind for this passion project. In order to avoid any misunderstandings, this project is not to be confused with Steven Knight’s Ferrari series for Apple TV+. It’s unclear when the Ferrari will be available, but it’s believed to be next year.
