Diego Luna and Gael Garca Bernal, the stars of the highly awaited Andor series, are already gearing up for their next project, which premieres in the near future. Hulu’s new Spanish-language boxing series La Máquina, which will be produced by Disney’s television unit of Searchlight Pictures, will include the couple as its stars. First, they appeared together in Y Tu mamá también, then in Rudo y Cursi, Casa de mi Padre, Maya and the Three, and most recently in Maya and the Three, an animated Netflix series. Luna and Bernal founded the non-profit Documental Ambulante with Elena Fortes in 2005, which supports and encourages documentary filming in places where documentaries are scarce. Gabriel Ripstein is set to film La Máquina with Marco Ramirez serving as showrunner.
Luna and Bernal’s La Corriente del Golfo banner, together with Gerardo Gatica, Leandro Halperin, and Adam Fishbach, will create the limited-series project. For his final shot at the title, Bernal will play a middle-aged boxer, who is given the opportunity by his clever manager Luna. However, in order to get to the battle, the two will have to cross a strange underground force. For all we know, it might be about anything more than simply boxing. For Craig Erwich, Hulu’s president of Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment, getting the series to Hulu was a big deal because it’s a great opportunity for Hulu and ABC. “We are delighted to work with Searchlight Television again on this upcoming Hulu Original. As renowned storytellers, Gael, Diego, and Marco will take audiences on a journey through their characters’ final moments together.
It was also praised by Searchlight President Matthew Greenfield and David Greenbaum, who said: Bringing Gael and Diego back together for La Máquina is a great pleasure, and their friendship and chemistry is a delight to watch.” Moreover, Marco’s particular voice and vision allow us to explore this universe in a whole new way.” In the second season of the Andor series, which begins filming later this year, Luna will resume his role as Cassian Andor. Bernal will also be appearing on Disney+, since his casting in Marvel’s Halloween special, an adaptation of the comic book Werewolf by Night, was revealed last year.
