Even though we’re in the thick of the summer movie season, and the holidays are just around the corner, moviegoers can never be too prepared to anticipate all the next Oscar contenders. Director Martin Scorsese’s next film, Killers of the Flower Moon, starring Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, is one of the most hotly awaited prize candidates. However, it appears that spectators will have to wait a little longer for this exciting murder mystery. According to Deadline, Apple TV is considering a Cannes premiere for Killers of the Flower Moon. For those who want to recoup the cost of their expensive $100 million+ films, the picture will be released theatrically through Paramount, which Deadline claims might be the future for streamers.
There have been several films in the past that have had similar Oscar journeys, such as Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood by Quentin Tarantino On a $90 million budget, the picture had its global debut at Cannes before going on to gross nearly $374 million at the box office worldwide in its summer theatrical run. Brad Pitt received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance in the film. Compared to Once Upon a Time, Killers of the Flower Moon doesn’t have the same kind of money. It’s said to have a $200 million budget in Hollywood, but it would have to be released in cinemas in order to make that money back.
The picture is off to a promising start if it has a name like Scorsese attached to it. There is a genuine chance that this may be Scorsese’s next The Wolf of Wall Street; despite the fact that his previous truly theatrical feature, Silence, was a box office failure, there is a lot of hope that this could be a success. Since it is based on a David Grann novel, which recounts a series of murders committed by affluent Osage Indians when oil was discovered on their property, this is especially relevant given the film’s subject matter.
The FBI was also formed as a result of this case. This murder mystery has all the ingredients to be both a critical and commercial success when paired with the star power of Scorsese, De Niro, and DiCaprio. Killers of the Flower Moon is receiving the full theatrical treatment, even though we have to wait a bit longer to watch it. CODA and Cha Cha Real Smooth, two of Apple’s recent best picture winners, have garnered critical acclaim. When you have films like Flower Moon and directors like Scorsese at your disposal, you know that hot streak will continue.
