Alia Bhatt plays a femme fatale who seeks vengeance on her abusive husband, played by her Gully Boy co-star Vijay Varma, in Netflix’s Darlings, which was teased a few days ago. The trailer begins with Varma’s character, Hamza Sheikh, introducing himself and expressing his love for Badru. We get a peek at their married life while being treated to overhead images of Mumbai’s cityscape and lively music. Suddenly, though, the mood shifts in the middle of the trailer when Hamza disappears.
Badru informs the authorities of his absence, and they become suspicious of her right away. Indeed, there’s plenty of excellent reason for them to be. When Badru and his mother-in-law seize control of Hamza’s home, we learn that he is not really absent at all. Roshan Mathew’s character, who appears to be an accomplice, helped the two complete their task. We learn that Hamza abused Badru and that this is her vengeance through flashbacks – and there are a lot of them. Irreverent comedy and dark topics are apparent in the film’s tone by debutant filmmaker Jasmeet K. Reen.
Darlings mark Bhatt’s production debut. After starring in the critically acclaimed and financially successful historical epic Gangubai Kathiawadi, the actress has swiftly established herself as one of Hindi cinema’s brightest and most bankable young stars. Ranbir Kapoor’s fantasy epic Brahmastra will also include her with her hubby in a Telugu language action flick RRR. For the streamer, Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment is collaborating on Darlings, as it did on earlier games including Bard of Blood, Betaal, and Class of 83. Shefali Shah plays Badru’s mother in the film.
With Netflix’s International Emmy-winning series Delhi Crime, he has seen a comeback in his acting career that began with Mira Nair’s Golden Lion-winning drama Monsoon Wedding more than two decades ago. Both Varma and Mathew have previously acted in Netflix projects such as the anthology film Ghost Stories and the social satire Choked. In just a few short weeks, Netflix will be able to stream Darlings.
