Charlie Cox will reprise his role as Daredevil in the new animated series Spider-Man: Freshman Year at San Diego Comic-Con this week. He’ll also be appearing in the upcoming live-action Disney+ series Echo, which was announced only a few weeks ago. He made his first appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which marked his comeback to the Marvel canon following Marvel Studios’ acquisition of the Netflix series. In 2015, Cox made his television debut as Daredevil in the Netflix series of the same name. The Punisher, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and the crossover event series The Defenders were all part of the larger Netflix Marvel world. Amidst the rise of Marvel Studios and Netflix’s own streaming shows, fans assumed they’d seen the last of their favourite characters.
A new Daredevil series, starring Cox as Matt Murdock, has been rumoured since May. Kevin Fiege, Marvel’s President at the time, said that Cox will play Daredevil in a future episode, although it wasn’t clear at the time how many Daredevil appearances were to come. Spider-Man: Freshman Year won’t be available on Disney+ for some time.
The new animated series will debut on the streamer in 2024, according to the panel. Dr Octopus, The Rhino, Scorpion, Speed Demon and Tarantula are some of the other notable villains that will appear in this season’s comic book series, in addition to Daredevil. At the Marvel Studios animation event, there were additional tidbits regarding Season 2 of What If…?, I Am Groot, Marvel Zombies, and X-Men 97 that will air in the near future.
A day before Marvel Studios takes over Hall H to disclose their plans for Phase 4 and, presumably, what fans may anticipate from Phase 5, these announcements come to pass. Marvel has a lot planned, but it’s safe to assume that Daredevil fans are thrilled to hear that Charlie Cox will appear in several forthcoming projects. If only Jon Bernthal, Deborah-Ann Woll, Krysten Ritter, and Mike Colter could be confirmed as returning to their roles as the beloved characters they played in the first season.
