The highly awaited first look at I Am Groot, the highly anticipated animated collection coming to Disney+ in early August, was one of the nicest things to come out of today’s SDCC panels. Fans’ favourite character Groot (played by Vin Diesel in the Marvel film Guardians of the Galaxy) will make an appearance as Baby Groot in this collection of five short stories. Groot unwittingly antagonises a collection of small critters who appear innocent but are armed to the teeth in a comical short that was shown at SDCC.
This is until Groot becomes so afraid he farts an actual leaf, and it appears that this is all that is required of him to get out of his deadly condition. Aside from that, the teaser trailer shows off I Am Groot’s photorealistic animation technique, which looks stunning and pays close attention to detail not only in Groot but also in the surrounding environment and other characters that appear in the video. Short stories that take place between the events of the second volume of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 are also expected, as well as a lot of free time for Baby Groot to experiment with diverse and nature-based appearances. The I Am Groot image, which was launched back in June, captures the lighthearted tone of the book, which should be a lot of fun to read through.
Diesel will return as the film’s protagonist, and Bradley Cooper has been cast as Rocket’s sidekick. Short film filmmaker Kirsten Lepore, who previously worked on Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, is in charge of the new collection of short films. James Gunn, the director of the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films and the man most familiar with Groot, serves as executive producer for this anthology. A storyline and probable guest stars have yet to be released for any of I Am Groot’s short stories, even though the launch date is only a few days away. So it’s possible that we’ll see another trailer in the near future. I Am Groot will debut on Disney+ on August 10th.
