Strange Way of Life, Pedro Almodóvar’s next Western, appears to have had some horse trading going on behind the scenes. New images were published on Instagram and Twitter just now. The film’s production will begin in August, as previously announced. Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal are shown sitting on their horses beside filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar in the new images, which were released today. Almodóvar appears to have changed costumes between the two very similarly posed photographs of Hawke and Pascal. Almodóvar wore a hat, sunglasses, a white button-up shirt, and a white t-shirt with trousers in the photograph with Hawke.
As opposed to the Hawaiian shirt Pascal wears in Almodóvar’s shot with Almodóvar. Together with Hawke’s black shirt and Pascal’s yellow one, the two opposing stars are depicted rather well. The photographs’ Twitter description, “Inside you there are two wolves,” was a parody by the FILM DAZE Twitter account. On Instagram, Pascal also shared a photo of him riding a horse. Strange Way of Life, a widely anticipated Western, tells the narrative of two middle-aged gunslingers, Silva and Jake, whose stories are intertwined. The story revolves around Silva’s visit to Bitter Creek to see his former colleague, Jake, who is now the town’s sheriff.
It turns out that Jake has more plans in store for Silva than merely reminiscing about their past experiences twenty years ago. In an effort to keep the storyline under wraps, Almodóvar has given few further clues about the film’s story. The filming of Strange Way of Life is now taking place in Spain. The filming site evokes the European backdrop of many popular Spaghetti Westerns, a genre that grew to prominence in the mid-1960s, long after the original success of American Westerns, which were produced in the southwest US throughout the 1940s & 1950s. To be filmed in Almera, Spain, the location of Sergio Leone’s classic spaghetti western The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly will be used. The film’s official release date is yet to be determined.
