This year, Disney+ conducted a panel at the beginning of SDCC to show off National Treasure: Edge of History, a highly anticipated new series. Treasure hunters who decipher ancient artefacts will be the focus of this new series, which draws inspiration from Nicolas Cage’s 2004 and 2007 action films (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent). Panellists showed video from the new show’s production, including a first peek and some behind-the-scenes footage. Fans of the National Treasure film series will be pleased to learn from the featurette’s first and most important revelation: the TV show, which functions as a soft reboot, will retain all the elements that made the movies special, including the mystery, fun, and fast-paced adventure that jumps from location to location with plenty of twists.
The panel also revealed that Justin Bartha isn’t the only recognisable figure we’ll see when the series begins. As Peter Sadusky, Academy Award nominee Harvey Keitel (Pulp Fiction) will return to the show as a guest star. Since Sadusky was a Freemason in the original films, it was his duty to assist Benjamin Gates (Cage) in uncovering historical mysteries. As a result, it’s feasible that Sadusky will also be a form antihero in the series. Also in the brief, returning cast member Bartha gushed about how much more enjoyable it is to solve the mysteries of National Treasure: Edge of History now that we’re in a technologically advanced era than in the early aughts.
For her part, The Mask of Zorro villain Catherine Zeta-Jones (The Mask of Zorro) reveals that she is a fan of the films and previews an exciting cat-and-mouse game between her character and the explorers, in which they will try to outwit one other. In National Treasure: Edge of History, Mira Nair (Vanity Fair) will helm, with Marianne and Cormac Wibberley (who wrote the original movie) providing the screenplay. Executive producers Jon Turtletaub and Jerry Bruckheimer, who directed the original flicks, return. Lisette Olivera, Jordan Rodrigues, Zuri Reed, Jake Austin Walker, Antonio Cipriano, Lyndon Smith, and Jacob Vargas are also part of the cast.
The release date for National Treasure: Edge of History on Disney+ has yet to be announced by the company.
