Now that we’ve seen the first season of Abbott Elementary, we know that the Quinta Brunson-led show will be returning for a 2nd season! It’s a return to the exuberant enjoyment of the mockumentary format with folks who both love their professions and are…maybe horrible at them, as the series follows the everyday lives of Abbott Elementary’s teachers (sorry Principal Ava). An exclusive from Deadline has announced that the show will be returning with additional episodes and a series regular for Mr Johnson (William Stanford Davis) this time around at San Diego Comic-Con. How should fans of the show interpret this?
We can’t wait to see more of Janine (Brunson) and her other teachers working together to make Abbott the finest school possible for her pupils! Given how many Emmy nominations the programme received, the news of a second season isn’t all that shocking. As well as several accolades for the entire play itself, Brunson, Tyler James Williams, Janelle James, and Sheryl Lee Ralph all took home individual acting honours for their work on the show as well. It’s nice to know that the show will have more episodes in Season 2 since, as a fan of all the mockumentary comedies, it is a trend and thus it feels appropriate for Abbott Elementary to follow suit. In the first season, we tried to illustrate what this programme could do. We can have some fun now,” Brunson added. “Now that we’ve finished the construction, we can enjoy some of these amusing bottle episodes.”
And when showrunner Patrick Schumacker hinted at the possibility of more episodes in Season 2, Brunson just said, “OK, there you go. This season has more episodes than the first.” The romance between Janine and Gregory was left unresolved at the conclusion of the first season (Williams). It’s great to have a “will they or won’t they?” back on our screens every week with Ben Wyatt and Leslie Knope at the helm of Abbott Elementary. Season 2 isn’t a surprise, and I hope that it brings greater attention to the show, but the prospect of additional episodes? That’s the cherry on top! Sept. 21 is the date for Season 2.
