Reports confirm that Mortal Kombat 2 is still in development and will be directed by the first film’s director, Simon McQuoid, for this action-adventure sequel to New Line Cinemas’ 2021 Mortal Kombat film and the latest adaptation of the iconic fighting game series, which is now in production. Jeremy Slater, who previously worked on Moon Knight, has been tapped by New Line to draught the script for the impending sequel, according to a new report from Deadline. This fresh source reveals that the director of both films will be the same, despite the fact that the project will have a different writer.
As a commercial filmmaker, McQuoid has worked with companies like Xbox and PlayStation and received several accolades for his work, including the Cannes Picture Festival’s Grand Prix and a Grand Clio. He made his feature film directorial debut with Mortal Kombat. One of McQuoid’s planned projects is a return to the Mortal Kombat universe, which adds yet another project to his list of upcoming work. Last year’s Mortal Kombat movie, which was based on the fighting game franchise started in 1992 by Ed Boon and John Tobias, featured Cole Young, a rookie to the series, who was played by Lewis Tan.
To battle the forces of Outworld, who want to take over Earthrealm through a martial arts tournament called “Mortal Kombat,” the teenage MMA fighter teams up with the world’s finest champions. There were numerous well-known and beloved video game characters that joined Cole on his mission to preserve Earthrealm, including Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Kung Lao (Max Huang), Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Jax (Josh Lawson). Shao Kahn, the hammer-wielding emperor of Outworld, and Hollywood action hero Johnny Cage, who many fans have been lobbying for WWE wrestler The Miz to represent in a sequel, were notable absentees from the original film that many fans hope to see in the sequel.
At this time, no one has been confirmed to return or make a debut in Mortal Kombat II. Because of the COVID-19 epidemic, movie theatres were forced to close, and 2021’s Mortal Kombat helped bring them back to life. It was among the first major blockbusters to see if audiences were ready to return to the cinemas when it launched day-and-date on HBO Max and in theatres in April 2021. To date, the film has been one of HBO Max’s most popular offerings. Todd Garner and E. Bennett Walsh of Broken Road Production and James Wan of Atomic Monster joined McQuoid in producing the first picture, which he also directed.
Executive producers were Victoria Palmeri, Michael Clear, Jeremy Stein, and Larry Kasanoff. Greg Russo and Dave Callaham penned the script for the first film, which was based on a narrative by Russo and Oren Uziel; none of the writers has been confirmed to return for the sequel. Aside from Slater’s involvement as a writer and McQuoid’s return to helm the impending sequel, nothing is known about the crew behind it. Mortal Kombat 2’s release date is presently unknown. On HBO Max, you can now view the 2021 film.
