An official trailer for Kleo, the next German-language Netflix Original series, has just been released. It shows a crime thriller full of character, action, and fun. With a central character named Kleo Straub (Jella Haase) performed by the German actress Jella Haase, Kleo Straub is the brainchild of Hanno Hackfort, Richard Kropf, and Bob Konrad, whose earlier works include 4 Blocks and the first German-language Amazon Original You Are Wanted.
This former East German assassin goes on a murdering spree that resembles The Bride from Kill Bill, but with a lot more violence. On the orders of the Stasi, Kleo kills a businessman in West Berlin in 1987. In turn, the Stasi, the same state intelligence agency she previously worked for, sets her up and arrests her shortly after. She is then hated by everyone in her social circle. Kleo, who had been imprisoned for two years, is freed as the Berlin Wall is down. Soon after that, she begins to understand the true scope of the scheme that landed her in prison, and she discovers that it is far more complex and extensive than she ever anticipated.
A West Berlin cop, Sven, pursues Kleo as she sets off in quest of answers and vengeance, looking for those responsible for the scheme to betray her (Dimitrij Schaad). The tone of the trailer is distinctly Tarantino-esque from the get-go. In terms of violence, perhaps not in terms of bloodshed, but definitely in terms of intensity and expressiveness. Kleo, the protagonist/anti-hero, is introduced in a style that hints at a complex and fascinating character. Pufferfish poison is one of the tactics she uses to kill her prey in the two-minute-long teaser video.
When Sven characterises her as “totally insane,” it’s because he’s exactly right. From little we’ve seen of her so far, Kleo certainly emanates a frantic intensity as she embarks on a life-or-death quest for vengeance. “I’ve dedicated my life to serving my nation. As a result, I was sentenced to prison. “I’d like to know why this is happening.” In her eyes, Kleo has a little deranged appearance that makes up for her lack of roughness in her tone. Zeitsprung Pictures’ Michael Souvignier and Till Derenbach are the producers of this “real narrative,” in which certain things “truly happened.” Julius Feldmeier, Vladislav Burlakov, Thandi Sebe, Yun Huang, Marta Sroka, and Alessija Lause round out the cast, which also includes director Haase and actor Schaad.
On August 19, Netflix will exclusively release Kleo.
