With just two seasons of Gentleman Jack on the air, it was no surprise that HBO had decided to discontinue the gay period drama. Creator Sally Wainwright gave viewers some reason to believe that the love story between Ann and Anne may continue if the show could find a worldwide home on another platform. During an exclusive conversation with RadioTimes.com, Wainwright said that the BBC has shown an interest in the continuation of Gentleman Jack, but that the programme requires a new streaming partner to continue.
Because it is a co-production between HBO and the BBC, the historical drama set in 19th-century Yorkshire will need to find a new streaming service willing to offer it worldwide. For the third season of Gentleman Jack, Wainwright remarked, “If HBO had been up for it, there’d have been no question.” On top of getting great reviews and drawing an appreciative audience, the play also had an influence on the LGBT women’s community. “It was a really successful show for them in all aspects. “Our fan base is out of this world.”
Gentleman Jack is based on Anne Lister’s real-life journals and follows Suranne Jones as Anne, a woman who wants to live life on her terms. Her connections with women were documented in coded journals. Set out on a mission to repair her uncle’s estate in 1832, she becomes a leader for the LGBTQ+ community and falls in love with Ann Walker (Sophie Rundle). As a response to the news of the program’s termination, Jones posted an Instagram video comprising season two bloopers and a list of the memorials to Lister that have been erected since the show premiered.
When asked about the experience, Jones remarked, “I have never been part of a production that has made such a significant effect and touched my heart as this one has.” “I want to express my gratitude for all of your assistance. Instagram tributes to Gentleman Jack were also posted by Rundle when the news broke. Rundle stated, “I am extremely glad to have played a role in reclaiming their position in history.” “I am in awe of the outpouring of affection this show has generated. And proud. “I’m really proud of myself.”
HBO Max subscribers may view both seasons of Gentleman Jack.
