The Shape, the first film in director David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy, brought fresh vitality to the venerable horror brand in 2018. The films commemorate the return of Michael Myers to Haddonfield 40 years after his first reign of terror on the little town, bringing him and Laurie Strode face-to-face for a final fight. September 6 marks the release of Best Buy’s exclusive 4K Ultra HD Steelbook edition of Green’s second film in the Halloween franchise, Halloween Kills, ahead of October 14’s finale to the trilogy Halloween Ends. It begins right where Halloween left off, with Laurie Strode triumphant over her boogeyman, Michael Myers, burning in a cage in the basement of the Strode home.
Even though she finally feels relieved that Michael is no longer alive, she hears from her hospital bed that The Shape managed to escape the flames and is now stalking the streets of Haddonfield once more. A new generation of citizens in a small Illinois town has risen to the challenge, and they’re determined to track down and kill the monster that has terrorised their town for the better part of four decades now. As a result of this, Halloween Kills was seen as the series’ uncomfortable middle child, unsure of what to do with its characters, given that there was supposed to be a third film following it in the future.
The film, despite its problems, was a moderately enjoyable slasher that reunited many performers from throughout the franchise’s history for a film that builds on Haddonfield itself. This is the second time Best Buy has offered Halloween Kills in a Steelbook collector’s edition, with the sole variation being the colour of the cover this time around. As a result, Michael’s face is no longer tinged with blood-red, and the title is now highlighted in red. All the extras, including the extended version with an alternate conclusion, are included in this collector’s edition, giving fans another chance to get their hands on it.
Unused sequences are included, as with featurettes on topics including the Strodes as a family, Michael’s murdering spree, and “Haddonfield’s Open Wounds,” which focuses on the individuals who returned after Michael’s rampage and how their lives were changed by it. Danny McBride, who wrote the screenplay for Halloween Kills, was also on board as a director. It also included a cast that included Judy Greer, Andi Matichak and Anthony Michael Hall. Many of Haddonfield’s long-time residents, such as Kyle Richards, Charles Cyphers, and Nancy Stephens, reappear in the film as well.
This year’s Halloween Kills will get a new Steelbook on September 6.
