Steve Carell stars as a psychiatrist who takes on the role of a serial murderer in the psychological thriller The Patient, which will premiere on FX in August in the ultimate “I can heal him” scenario (Domhnall Gleeson). The 10-episode limited series will premiere on August 30.
It’s easy to pick up the ominous tone of the teaser as soon as Alan Strauss (Carell) sits down with Sam Fortner (Gleeson), a new patient who looks to be agitated. A few intimate scenes are shown, and we find that Alan has been struggling with some heavy burdens of his own, as he describes his motives for entering the field of psychotherapy.
Alan tries to encourage Sam in the trailer’s return to the session. His actions are accompanied by images from Sam’s past and tense and unsettling soundtrack. As soon as they go to a new site for their therapy sessions, Alan’s voice is filled with anxiety. The trailer begins with a frantic struggle for survival as Alan finds himself in more perilous circumstances and surroundings. Sam, on the other hand, appears to be doing little to improve himself. Alan, a therapist, takes on a new patient, Sam, in The Patient. Sam confesses to being a serial killer during their first session together.
When Sam asks Alan to help him rein in his murderous impulses, Alan becomes Sam’s prisoner. As Alan tries to help Sam, he quickly discovers that Sam’s reluctance to go further into his mind may put his life in danger. Alan’s confinement brings him face-to-face with memories of his old therapist, the death of his wife, and his alienation from his son. Before he becomes an accomplice to Sam’s killings or a victim of Sam’s next murder, Alan races to stop Sam. Carell, Gleeson, Linda Emond, David Alan Grier, Laura Niemi, Alex Rich, and Andrew Leeds feature in The Patient. Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, together with Carell, Caroline Moore, Victor Hsu, and Chris Long, executive produce the series. Gwyneth Horder-Payton, Kevin Bray, and Long all act as the directors. FX Productions made the show.
As of August 30th, The Patient will be available to stream on Hulu.
