Serena Waterford, played by June and Yvonne Strahovski, is back in the spotlight in some new photos. After the death of Fred Waterford in season 4, the logline for the upcoming series hints at the difficulties June will face in the aftermath (Joseph Fiennes). However, Alexis Bledel’s Emily Malek will not be returning in the upcoming episodes. This is where you can find out all you need to know about the upcoming season of the programme, from cast members to narrative details. There’s more, so keep reading to catch up on everything that’s happened thus far in season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale.

The 5th season of The Handmaid’s Tale premiere date
Season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale will premiere on Hulu on September 14th in the United States. The foreign release dates have not yet been released. Before new episodes are broadcast weekly on Hulu, there will be a two-episode premiere to kick off season 5. After filming was completed in 2022, this all comes together. Actress Amanda Brugel, whose character Rita appeared in season five, announced the news with her followers on Instagram in February 2022, after sharing a video of her working on the programme. According to a source, filming signs for The Handmaid’s Tale were put up in Ontario, Canada under the code name Ruby Red. From February through March of 2022, these proposed filming dates would be in Brantford.

What happens in season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale?
Before you read any further, be warned that this article contains major plot spoilers for earlier seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale!
Season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale will continue where season 4 ended, according to Hulu. June and other Gilead survivors beat Fred Waterford to death in the woods at the end of the story. Season 5’s official tagline reads: “Commander Waterford’s death has left June with a slew of questions regarding who she is & what she stands for. As Gilead’s influence spreads to Canada, the widowed Serena makes an effort to improve her status. As he seeks to rebuild Gilead and climb to power, Commander Lawrence collaborates with Aunt Lydia. June, Luke and Moira confront Gilead from a distance as they continue their attempt to save and reconnect with Hannah.” Samira Wiley, star of The View’s Moira, said on the show: “Exactly where we left off, that’s where we’re starting over. Commander Waterford’s fate was revealed in the season finale. As a result, June finds herself in a pickle, as she always does.” It was also revealed that June will still be working out how to bring down Gilead from Canada in the next season.

Earlier this week, Moss told TVLine: “I’d say this season has been one of the more exhilarating ones thus far. There have been 4 seasons in the past where a lot has happened. There are seasons when things don’t happen quite as much. With [season 5], I’m having a hard time keeping up. And this isn’t just a show of good faith. To be honest, the pace of things is so frenetic that I’m beginning to feel overwhelmed.”
At the same time, we’ll be getting closer to Margaret Atwood’s The Testaments, which is the follow-up to The Handmaid’s Tale. Almost a decade following the incidents of the first book, Hulu has stated they will be adapting the novel. Previously, Hulu’s head of scripted originals Jordan Helman said that it will be tied to The Handmaid’s Tale. According to him, “The Testaments on Hulu and the final end of The Handmaid’s Tale are connected.”

5th season of “The Handmaid’s Tale Cast
Season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale is planned to feature most of the original cast members. Moss, Ann Dowd, O-T Fagbenle, Max Minghella, Wiley, Moira, Bradley Whitford, Rita, Serena Waterford, and Janine (played by Yvonne Strahovski and Madeleine Brewer) will all return as June. Some of the characters introduced in season 4 are also expected to return. Speculation is rife that Mckenna Grace may return to Gilead as Mrs Keyes, following her success in the last series. The actress is famous for her part in the Sabrina revival on Netflix.
After the horrific death of Commander Waterford in season 4, Joseph Fiennes is expected to have a smaller part in the programme.

The showrunner Bruce Miller intimated to Entertainment Weekly(opens in new tab) that he would “die” to see Joe [Fiennes] again if we didn’t see him in flashbacks. However, Alexis Bledel, who portrayed Emily Malek, the show’s previous handmaid, will no longer be a part of the cast. She publicized her resignation in a statement to Entertainment Weekly(opens in a new tab). Bledel made the following statement: “The Handmaid’s Tale has been too emotionally draining for me to continue reading right now, so I’ve decided to put it down.

Thank you, Hulu, MGM, the cast and crew, and Bruce Miller for penning such eloquent and poignant passages for Emily.” The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 trailer has yet to be released, which is a shame. Nevertheless, as soon as we get our first look at it, we’ll know for sure when it’s going to be out. Hulu has done this in the past, releasing a trailer a month before the show is set to air. In the month of August, keep a look out for the first clips of season 5, which will premiere in mid-September.
