Martin Lawrence has spoken out about the upcoming Bad Boys 4 film in the light of the recent controversy involving his Bad Boys co-star. In 2020, Lawrence and co-star Will Smith will reprise their roles as Miami police detectives Marcus Burnett and Mike Lowrey in the third edition of the action-comedy trilogy. Sony Pictures began developing a follow-up to Bad Boys For Life, titled Bad Boys 4. With the Smith-Chris Rock incident at the Oscars raising doubts about the film’s prospects, Lawrence is talking optimistically about the project’s future. During an interview with Ebony magazine, the actor opened out about his friendship with Smith and their possibilities of making the movie following the slapping incident.
It’s possible that if Bad Boys 4 does come out, Lawrence may reprise Burnett as a more family-oriented investigator, while Smith will return as Lowrey. When comedian and Oscars presenter Chris Rock joked about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith at the Oscars in March, it made headlines. Smith had to withdraw from the Academy and accept a decade-long suspension even though he had just won an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of King Richard.
There is a discussion regarding a Bad Boys sequel because of the actor’s apology to Rock, but other projects linked to his name have either been put on hold or halted indefinitely since the event. Despite the growing buzz, Sony Chairman Tom Rothman affirmed in May that the sequel is still in the works at the studio, & now Lawrence’s words give fans of the series new hope. In the same interview, Lawrence went on to describe how he felt and what it meant to be a member of the Bad Boys.
When the franchise began in 1995, Smith and the comic were able to prove themselves, according to the comedian. This is what he had said: I couldn’t believe it. Two Black stars, and two sitcom stars, and making money at the movie office was a significant accomplishment for us to achieve as a team and establish that we are capable of delivering. Because I did not attend college, I considered my time spent watching television to be my college years. When it came to movies, I felt like I’d graduated; everything was different. Due to several setbacks and delays on the path to its release, Bad Boys For Life was a huge success, grossing $426 million in ticket sales and boosting the franchise’s worldwide total to $840 million.
